Public Health Competencies

Core competencies are the essential knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for the practice of public health. They transcend the boundaries of specific disciplines and are independent of program and topic. Public Health Sciences Domain: The student demonstrated key knowledge and critical thinking skills related to the PH sciences and was able to apply this knowledge in practice. *

Assessment and Analysis: The student was able to collect, assess, analyze and apply information required to make evidence-based decisions, prepare reports, conduct investigations and make recommendations for policy and program development. *

Policy and Program Planning, Implementation and Evaluation: The student demonstrated the skills needed to effectively choose options, and to plan, implement and evaluate policies and/or programs in public health. *

Partnerships, Collaboration and Advocacy: The student was able to influence and work with others to improve the health and well-being of the public through the pursuit of a common goal. *

Diversity and Inclusiveness: The student had the socio-cultural competencies required to interact effectively with diverse individuals, groups and communities. *

Communication: The student was able to exchange ideas, opinions and information (includes internal and external exchanges; written, verbal, non-verbal and listening skills; computer literacy) and was able to provide appropriate information to different audiences; working with the media and social marketing techniques. *

Leadership: The student demonstrated leadership competencies that built capacity, improved performance and enhanced the quality of the working environment. They helped the organization to create, communicate and apply shared visions, missions and values. *

The Supervisor shall review, recommend edits if necessary, and approve the project section of the student's practicum report. Students (or supervisors) shall then forward the approval to the Practicum Administrator. If not, please reach out to the Practicum Student to complete this.
