Expert: Suicide prevention

Published: 9 September 2025

Sept. 10 is World Suicide Prevention Day. A new World Health Organization report underscores the urgency of suicide prevention, estimating that 727,000 people died by suicide in 2021 alone. It is a leading cause of death among young people across all countries and socioeconomic contexts.

Marie-Claude Geoffroy is an Assistant Professor in Department of Psychiatry at McGill University, researcher at Douglas Research Centre and Canada Research Chair in Youth Mental Health and Suicide Prevention.

She can discuss global trends in suicide, early warning signs in youth that are often overlooked by adults and the importance of mental health programs in schools.

Her latest research, a 25-year study that followed Quebec children into adulthood, revealed two distinct patterns in how suicidal thoughts emerge.
