This course will survey foundational texts and thinkers in critical social theory, as they relate to the fields of media and communication studies. This will include core texts in Marxism, the Frankfurt School, public sphere theory, feminism, post-structuralism, post-colonialism and queer theory. The course will prepare students with key theoretical and conceptual vocabularies for advanced study in the field.

A history of development, focusing on the ideologies as well as the practices that have shaped how empires, governments, corporations, and individuals have sought to 'improve' the world—most often, but not exclusively, in the global south.
