Hockey Martlets can tie CIS record at Concordia, Saturday
MONTREAL -- The McGill women's hockey team can tie a Canadian university record for most consecutive victories against a CIS opponent on Saturday, when they travel across town to take on the Concordia Stingers. The game is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at the Ed Meagher Arena on the Loyola campus.
The two-time defending national champion Martlets are ranked No.1 in the nation with a 9-0 record in the Quebec conference. They have won 66 consecutive games overall against CIS opponents, one shy of the CIS record set by the Alberta Pandas between 2003 and 2005.
McGill, which owns a 32-0 dossier against teams ranked in the CIS Top 10 during their run for the record, suffered their last defeat in a 2-1 shootout affair against Alberta on December 30, 2007. The Martlets can tie the Pandas' CIS mark with a win over Concordia (1-7) in what will be their final regular season duel before the December exam break.
In head-to-head competition with the Stingers, McGill has won 29 in a row since losing a 2-1 decision at Concordia on Feb. 5, 2006. The two rivals have met each other only once this season, with the Martlets skating to a 5-0 home-ice victory on Oct. 9.
Should McGill beat the Stingers this weekend, they could break the record on Dec. 28 when they battle Toronto at Concordia's Theresa Humes tournament.
McGill last regular season loss was a 2-1 decision on the road against Ottawa on Feb. 19, 2007. Since then, the Martlets have won 49 consecutive contests in QSSF action, plus an additional 12 wins in league playoffs.
