Rookie Oles shines as Martlets stretch streak to 82

MONTREAL - Freshman forward Leslie Oles of Beaconsfield, Que., scored once and added a pair of assists as the No.2-ranked McGill Martlets skated to a 7-4 win over Concordia Stingers in the women's hockey season opener, at McConnell Arena, Friday.

The result extended McGill's win streak to 82 consecutive games over QUHL opponents, dating back to a 2-1 loss at Ottawa on Feb.10, 2007. McGill also extended their win streak over Concordia to 34 straight games.

The Martlets, which had a 54-20 advantage in shots, led 5-1 after the opening period and 6-2 after two.

Also scoring for McGill were defenceman Cathy Chartrand of Lac Nominingue, Que., Gillian Ferrari of Thornhill, Ont., and Caroline Hill of Dorval, Que., plus forwards Ann-Sophie Bettez of Sept-Iles, Que., Lainie Smith (shorthanded) of Aurora, Ont., and Katia Clement-Heydra, a freshman from St. Bruno de Montarville, Que.

Concordia was led by a two-goal performance from right-winger Erin Lally, a sophomore from Calgary. Other markers were scored by Maggie MacNeil of Antigonish, N.S., and Emilie Bocchia of St. Leonard, Que.

Sophomore netminder Taylor Salisbury of Surrey, B.C., started in place of injured Olympian Charline Labonte and posted 16 saves for the win. Stingers goalie Audrey Doyen-Lessard of Charny, Que., made 47 saves in a losing cause.

McGill (1-0) will head south of the border to play Princeton and Yale next weekend, while Concordia (0-1) plays the Montreal Carabins, Oct. 15.
