CIS TOP 10 (#11): Both hockey teams in Top 4, volleyball ranked 9th
OTTAWA (CIS) - The two-time defending national champion McGill women's hockey team remain the No.1 team in the weekly CIS Top 10 poll, the hockey Redmen remain undefeated and have crept up to the No.4 spot. The volleyball Martlets are tied for No.9.
The hockey Martlets survived a scare against first-year Montreal on Saturday, edging the No. 10 Carabins (5-1-1) 3-2 in overtime, before dominating Ottawa 6-1. The victories allowed the Martlets to extend their overall winning streak against CIS opponents to 60 consecutive games dating back to December of 2007, seven shy of the CIS mark held by Alberta. They also lead a 35th straight Top 10 dating back to November of 2007.
No. 1 McGill resumes QSSF play Saturday against Carleton (3-3).
Men's hockey
The reigning University Cup champion Varsity Reds improved to 8-0 in conference play with a 4-3 overtime win over the No. 8 St. Francis Xavier X-Men (6-2-1) and a 5-1 defeat of Dalhousie.
UNB, which has led all four media polls so far this fall, faces the same two opponents this weekend, hosting StFX Friday night and Dalhousie on Saturday.
The McMaster Marauders are the new team to beat in CIS men's volleyball as they climbed to the top of the national rankings for the first time in program history.
In other CIS rankings this week a quintet of reigning national champions hold on to their No. 1 positions including the UBC Thunderbirds in women's volleyball, Simon Fraser Clan in women's basketball, Carleton Ravens in men's basketball, McGill Martlets in women's hockey, and UNB Varsity Reds in men's hockey.
Men's volleyball
The two-time defending OUA champion Marauders, ranked No. 2 in the first three coaches' polls of the season, knock off the perennial No. 1 Alberta Golden Bears, who fall two spots in the new rankings following a two-game split against Winnipeg.
McMaster, which swept Queen's and RMC in straight sets over the weekend to improve to 6-0 in conference play, reach No. 1 for the first time in history. The Marauders enjoy a break in their OUA schedule this week and get back on the court on Nov. 20 against Waterloo.
The Golden Bears, who went 18-0 in the regular season a year ago on their way to winning a second straight CIS title, are off to a 4-2 start this fall. Last weekend, they dropped a 3-2 decision to the No. 7 Wesmen (2-2) before prevailing 3-1 in the second end of the doubleheader.
Alberta had topped the last 36 national polls dating back to November of 2006.
The Calgary Dinos (3-1) also leapfrog the Bears in this week's Top 10. The Dinos are up one position to No. 2 after they swept No. 6 Manitoba (3-3), 3-0 and 3-1.
Rounding out the fourth poll of the campaign are No. 4 Laval (2-0), No. 5 Dalhousie (2-0), No. 8 Trinity Western (2-0), No. 9 Brandon (3-1) and No. 10 UBC (1-3).
Women's volleyball
Two-time reigning CIS champion UBC (4-0) visits winless Saskatchewan (0-4) for a pair this weekend after enjoying a break in the Canada West schedule.
Women's basketball
Defending national champion Simon Fraser improved to 3-0 in conference play with a 99-39 domination of Trinity Western and a 67-59 defeat of archrival UBC.
The Clan, who have now led 29 of 30 coaches polls dating back to the start of the 2007-08 schedule, are at No. 4 Regina (2-0) and Brandon (0-4) this weekend. Simon Fraser beat Regina 68-62 in last year's CIS final.
Men's basketball
The reigning CIS champion Ravens (2-0), winners of six of the last seven W.P. McGree trophies, opened conference play with a close call, edging Guelph 75-74, before outscoring Brock 80-63.
Carleton, which is No. 1 for the 29th time in 30 polls dating back to the start of the 2007-08 campaign, hosts No. 6 Windsor (2-0) and Western (2-0) this weekend.

McMaster grimpe au sommet en volleyball masculin

OTTAWA (SIC) - Les Marauders de McMaster sont la nouvelle équipe à battre en volleyball masculin de SIC, eux qui grimpent au sommet du Top 10 canadien pour la première fois de leur histoire cette semaine.
Dans les autres disciplines de SIC, un quintet de champions nationaux conservent la pole position, soit les Thunderbirds de UBC en volleyball féminin, le Clan de Simon Fraser en basketball féminin, les Ravens de Carleton en basketball masculin, les Martlets de McGill en hockey féminin, de même que les Varsity Reds de UNB en hockey masculin.
Volleyball masculin
Classés deuxièmes lors des trois premiers scrutins pancanadiens de la saison, les Marauders passent devant les Golden Bears de l'Alberta, qui glissent jusqu'à la troisième position du Top 10 après avoir divisé les honneurs d'un programme double face à Winnipeg.
McMaster, qui a balayé Queen's et le Collège militaire royal par des pointages identiques de 3-0 au cours de la dernière semaine pour porté sa fiche à 6-0, atteint le sommet du classement hebdomadaire de SIC pour la première fois de son histoire. Les Marauders profitent d'une pause au calendrier de SUO cette semaine et reprendront l'action le 20 novembre contre Waterloo.
Les Golden Bears, qui avaient conservé un dossier immaculé de 18-0 en saison régulière l'an dernier en route vers un deuxième titre de SIC consécutif, présentent un dossier de 4-2 cet automne. Le week-end dernier, ils ont perdu le premier de deux duels en cinq manches face aux Wesmen (2-2), avant de se reprendre le lendemain avec une victoire de 3-1.
L'Alberta avait dominé les 36 derniers scrutins nationaux depuis novembre 2006.
Les Dinos de Calgary (3-1) devancent eux aussi les Bears au Top 10 de cette semaine. Les Dinos grimpent de la troisième à la deuxième place suite à un impressionnant balayage aux dépens du Manitoba, 3-0 et 3-1.
Le nouveau Top 10 est complété par le Rouge et Or de Laval (No. 4 / 2-0), Dalhousie (No. 5 / 2-0), Manitoba (No. 6 / 3-3), Winnipeg (No. 7 / 2-2), Trinity Western (No. 8 / 2-0), Brandon (No. 9 / 3-1) et UBC (No. 10 / 1-3).
Volleyball féminin
Les Thunderbirds (4-0), championnes de SIC au terme des deux dernières saisons, profitaient d'une pause au calendrier de Canada-Ouest la semaine dernière. UBC dispute deux matchs face à la Saskatchewan (0-4) ce week-end.
Basketball féminin
Simon Fraser présente un dossier de 3-0 en saison régulière suite à une écrasante victoire de 99-39 aux dépens de Trinity Western et à un gain de 67-59 sur UBC.
Le Clan, qui a maintenant dominé 29 des 30 derniers scrutins pancanadiens depuis le début de la campagne 2007-2008, visite les Cougars de Regina (2-0) et Brandon (0-4) ce week-end. Simon Fraser a battu Regina 68-62 lors de la finale de SIC l'hiver dernier.
Basketball masculin
Les Ravens, gagnants de six des sept derniers trophées W.P. McGee à titre de champions de SIC, ont entamé la saison régulière avec une courte victoire de 75-74 sur Guelph et un gain de 80-63 sur Brock.
Carleton, qui tout comme Simon Fraser chez les dames domine le Top 10 pour une 29e fois au cours des 30 derniers scrutins, reçoit la visite des Lancers de Windsor (2-0) et de Western (2-0) ce week-end. Les Lancers sont classés sixièmes au pays.
Hockey féminin
Les Martlets ont eu la frousse samedi face au nouveau programme de l'Université de Montréal, l'emportant par 3-2 en prolongation sur les Carabins (5-1-1), elles-mêmes dixièmes au Top 10. McGill a eu la vie plus facile dimanche face à Ottawa, disposant des Gee-Gees par 6-1.
Championnes canadiennes au cours des deux dernières années, les Martlets ont porté à 60 leur série de victoires consécutives face à des adversaires de SIC (tous matchs confondus) et ne sont plus qu'à sept gains du record établi par l'Alberta. McGill domine de plus le Top 10 pour une 35e fois de suis, séquence qui remonte à novembre 2007.
Les Martlets affrontent Carleton (3-3) samedi.
Hockey masculin
Champions en titre de la Coupe Université, les Varsity Reds Reds ont porté leur fiche à 8-0 grâce à un gain de 4-3 en prolongation aux dépens des X-Men de St. Francis Xavier (6-2-1) - classés huitièmes au pays - et à une victoire plus aisée de 5-1 sur Dalhousie.
UNB affronte les deux mêmes adversaires ce week-end. Les Reds accueillent StFX vendredi et Dalhousie samedi.
