Bielby and Chartrand named McGill athletes of the week

MONTREAL -- Steven Bielby of Pte. Claire, Que., and Cathy Chartrand of Lac Nominingue, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Nov. 13, 2011.

 

Bielby, who measures 5-foot-8 and 155 pounds, earned four gold medals and was named swimmer of the meet for the third time this season, as McGill finished second in the third Quebec Cup swim meet of the season at the University's Memorial Pool, Sunday. The 22-year-old electrical engineering senior racked up a meet-high 644 points on the FINA scale. He won the 200-metre freestyle (1:52.57), the 400 individual medley (4:26.73) and the 100 butterfly (56.24). He also contributed to a win in the 4x100 freestyle relay (3:28.85). Bielby is a product of John Abbott College.

 

Chartrand, a 5-foot-10 defenceman with the Martlets hockey team, scored twice and assisted on the winning goal in McGill's 4-1 home-ice victory over Carleton last Saturday. A former member of the national team, the fifth-year physical education senior is in her second season as team captain. Prior to enrolling at McGill, she attended College Saint-Laurent.

Both athlete will receive a gift certificate from Ye Olde Orchard Pub.
