MONTREAL – Ann-Sophie Bettez, a sophomore forward from Sept-Iles, Que., netted a natural hat-trick in a span of five minutes and 54 seconds as the No.1-ranked McGill women’s hockey team skunked Concordia 7-0 at McConnell Arena, Saturday.

The Martlets improved to 13-0 on the season and extended their win streak to 42 consecutive games against CIS opponents. It also marked their 25th straight victory over Concordia, dating back to a 2-1 road loss on Feb. 5, 2006.

It was the second hat-trick of the season for Bettez, who earned her CIS rookie-of-the-year honours in her freshman campaign and has become the first player in team history to join the “20-20” club in regular season play. The 21-year-old management sophomore has a 20-25-45 record and ranks second in the country in goals, assists and points. She is only four points behind CIS scoring leader Tarin Podloski, who has played in nine more games and has an 18-31-49 point total. With six contests remaining, Bettez needs just three more goals to break the Quebec university record of 22 goals by Concordia’s Corinne Swirsky in 1999-00.

McGill outshot the Stingers 54-17 as goaltender Charline Labonté posted her seventh shutout in 10 starts this season and her 49th career whitewash in 105 games overall. Jordanna Peroff of Keswick, Ont., added a pair, including the game-winner. Other marksmen included defenceman Stacie Tardif of Ste. Anne de Bellevue, and Rebecca Martindale of Kingston, Ont.

Stingers goalie Audrey Doyon-Lessard made 47 saves in a losing cause.

The Martlets killed off all four Concordia power plays and remain perfect in that department this season, snuffing out all 45 man-power disadvantages faced, while scoring a pair of shorthanded markers. The McGill women also went 1-for-5 on the power play and that unit is operating at 30.9 per cent (21/68).

The McGill women will play at second-place Ottawa (6-5-2) Sunday evening and have a current 16-game win streak against the Gee-Gees , dating back to a 2-1 loss in the nation’s capital on Feb. 10, 2007.

Concordia (3-10-1) is slated to play next on Valentine’s Day, when they host Carleton (5-9-0).

MARTLET MURMURS: McGill is 27-2-0 overall, including losses to NCAA teams Harvard and St. Lawrence… The Martlets have an 11-0 record against teams that have been ranked in the CIS national top 10 poll this season… The Martlets have posted a team record seven hat-tricks to date… Bettez, who has had a five-goal game, leads the way with two ‘tricks, followed by one apiece from Vanessa Davidson, Marie-Andree Leclerc-Auger (a 5-goal game), Amy Soberano, Rebecca Martindale and defenceman Cathy Chartrand… Head coach Peter Smith is one victory away from his 250th win with the Martlets… In his 10th season behind the bench, Smith has posted a 249-104-27 record overall.
