OTTAWA - Ann-Sophie Bettez of Sept-Iles, Que., scored twice in a post-overtime shootout as top-ranked McGill escaped with a 2-1 road victory over host Carleton in women's university hockey, Saturday, extending their win streak to 90 consecutive games against QUHL opponents.

The Martlets had a 27-17 edge in shots as they improved to 54-0-1 lifetime in head-to-head confrontations against Carleton.

It was a real defensive struggle and the only players to score before the shootout were blueliners. The two teams battled through a scoreless opening period and the Ravens broke the ice late in the middle stanza when Kelsey VanderVeen, a sophomore from Lucknow, Ont., connected on a power-play at 18:55 for her fifth of the campaign.

It ended a shutout sequence of 228 minutes and 44 seconds for goaltender Charline Labonte, the native of Boisbriand, Que., who was credited with 16 saves and improved to 56-1-0 lifetime in regular season action, including a 6-0 mark this season.

McGill senior Carly Hill of Dorval, Que, notched the equalizer only 17 seconds after the intermission.

McGill won the shootout 3-2, which featured 12 shooters, getting a goal on their second shot from Jordanna Peroff after Sara Seiler had beaten Labonte on the Ravens' first attempt. Claudia Bergeron forced a sudden-death round when she scored to even the shootout at 2-2, setting the stage for Bettez.

The Martlets were 0-for-3 on the power play while Carleton replied on one of five chances.

"We weren't focused and missed the net way too much," said McGill head coach Peter Smith, hinting that the result was a bit of a wake-up call. "Perhaps we were a little leg heavy after getting off the bus and playing right away but that should not be an excuse. Carleton played well and perhaps we took them too lightly."

McGill, which sits atop the Quebec league standings with a 9-0 record, will close out the first semester with a game at second-place Concordia (4-2-2) on Dec. 4

Carleton (2-4-2), which has now suffered back-to-back shootout losses, closes out their semester on Sunday (Nov. 28) when they host the Montreal Carabins (4-4-2).

MARTLET MURMURS: The lone goal scored by McGill prior to the shootout session was the team's lowest offensive output against a CIS team in a dozen games, since losing 2-0 to Alberta in the gold medal game at the CIS championship tourney last spring.
