"WE ANIMALS" Photography Exhibit: Documenting Animals in the Human Environment
The Student Animal Legal Defense Fund at McGill is hosting a week long photography exhibit featuring the work of prominent Canadian photographer Jo-Anne McArthur.
The photos are drawn from her current project, We Animals, which documents animals in the human environment (www.weanimals.org). McArthur has travelled to over 40 countries photographing the realities of bullfighting, poaching in Africa, factory farming, whaling, bear bile farming in Asia, vivisection labs in North America and many more. The goal of "We Animals", McArthur notes, "has been to photograph animals in a way that breaks down the barriers humans have built that allow us to treat them as objects rather than as sentient beings."
McArthur captures human interactions with animals in a way that allows the viewer to find new meaning in unnoticed situations of use, abuse and sharing of spaces. Her unique talent brings awareness to animal issues in powerful ways. McArthur's stunning work has appeared in publications such as ELLE Canada, Canadian Living Magazine, and the New York Times.
An exclusive evening with the famed photographer open to all students and faculty, as well as select members of the public is planned for March 10, 2010 at 7:45pm in the Atrium of the McGill Faculty of Law. Several of Jo-Anne's pieces will be up for sale, ethical food and drinks will be provided, and raffle tickets will be sold for a chance to win gift certificates to Montreal vegetarian restaurants and a free photo/portrait shoot with McArthur in Toronto. Proceeds raised this evening will go to the Animal Legal Defense Fund, the Montreal SPCA, and the Fauna Foundation.
This event is part of "WE ANIMALS: McGill Symposium & Exhibit on Animal Law."
