Ronald Chwang’s legacy lives on at McGill’s Engine Centre
The late Ronald Chwang (BEng’72, DSc’12) was a pioneering entrepreneur and venture capitalist who served on the Faculty of Engineering Advancement Board (FAB) until 2021. Ronald, together with other FAB members, was instrumental in helping conceive the McGill Engine Centre.
Ronald received an honorary degree from McGill’s Faculty of Engineering in 2012. He said he was willing to take risks because he wasn’t afraid of failure. To honour his legacy, the Chwang and Seto families knew that there would be no better way than to further Engine’s reach across the University.
They established the Chwang-Seto Engineering Endowment Fund to create the Ronald Chwang Entrepreneurs-in-Residence. The Entrepreneurs-in-Residence at Engine are knowledgeable, experienced entrepreneurs and innovators who come from a variety of backgrounds. They are available to mentor McGill students and faculty members to help them take their start-up ideas to market.
In June, the Chwang and Seto families visited the campus and celebrated Ronald’s legacy with students, who showcased research ventures that have been supported by the Engine Centre. Engine celebrates its 10th anniversary this fall.

L’héritage de Ronald Chwang se perpétue au centre Engine de McGill
Le regretté Ronald Chwang (BEng' 72, DSc' 12) était un pionnier de l’entrepreneuriat et de l’investissement en capital-risque. Membre du conseil d’avancement de la Faculté de génie (FAB) jusqu’en 2021, Ronald a joué, en compagnie de ses collègues, un rôle déterminant dans la création du Centre Engine de McGill.
La Faculté de génie lui a décerné un diplôme honorifique en 2012. M. Chwang a affirmé qu’il n’hésitait pas à prendre des risques parce que l’échec ne lui faisait pas peur. Pour honorer son héritage, les familles Chwang et Seto ont jugé que rien n’égalerait le rayonnement d’Engine à travers toute l’université.
Ils ont donc établi le Fonds de dotation en génie Chwang-Seto, afin de créer le programme de résidence Ronald Chwang Entrepreneurs-in-Residence. Innovateurs chevronnés et reconnus, les entrepreneurs en résidence du centre Engine proviennent d’horizons divers. Ils sont prêts à conseiller les étudiants et les membres du corps enseignant de McGill dans la commercialisation de leurs projets de démarrage.
En juin dernier, les familles Chwang et Seto ont visité le campus pour célébrer l’héritage de Ronald avec les étudiants. Ceux-ci ont présenté des travaux de recherche ayant été soutenus par le centre Engine, qui fête cet automne son 10ème anniversaire.
