A combination of approaches results in better decisions

Published: 14 December 2023

Navigating decision-making complexities is no easy feat, but Henry Mintzberg, John Cleghorn Professor of Management Studies at McGill University, and Frances Westley, J.W. McConnell Chair in social innovation at the University of Waterloo, have crafted insightful methods to ease this process. Their work, published in the MIT Sloan Review in 2001, continues to offer valuable guidance on how to approach making decisions creatively. They assert that the most effective approach depends on the clarity and reliability of available information. When faced with the need to amalgamate numerous elements, it is essential to examine the problem. Intuition may sometimes offer solutions, however, in instances where information is less reliable, experimenting on a small scale can yield optimal results.
