Letters of reference

Applicants to the MDCM & PhD program

Applicants to the combined MDCM & PhD program are required have TWO (2) letters of reference submitted from individuals who have acted as mentors/supervisors for the applicant’s research activities.  The reference letters should address the applicant's:

  • research ability and potential
  • self reliance and independence
  • motivation
  • ability to plan and conduct research
  • ability to work as a member of a team
  • originality and creativity

These letters must be on official letterhead, contain the full name and McGill identification number of the applicant, and must be submitted directly from the referee in a sealed envelope to:

Letters may be submitted electronically as a single PDF/A-compliant file. Letters must be sent directly from the referee's institutional and verifiable e-mail account to aed [dot] med [at] mcgill [dot] ca with the subject heading of MDCM&PHD LETTER OF REFERENCE for <name of applicant>.  

Interfolio™ references are also acceptable.

The Office of Admissions, Equity and Diversity reserves the right to not accept any correspondence it feels does not come from a trusted source.  It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that their referee is well-informed of the procedures and deadlines for submitting their letter of reference.

Applicants to the MDCM & MBA program

As part of the admission process, candidates must provide TWO (2) professional letters of reference directly from individuals who have been directly responsible for evaluating their work performance and potential.  On the application form you must provide the names and email addresses of two individuals who have been directly responsible for evaluating your academic and/or managerial performance and potential.  McGill will automatically contact these referees and invite them to upload references using this recommendation form on your behalf.  

These letters must be on official letterhead, contain the full name and McGill identification number of the applicant, and must be submitted directly from the referee in a sealed envelope to:
