McGill Africa Umoja Summit: Sankofa Rising. Reclaiming African Knowledge to Shape Global Futures. Sunset over an African landscape with trees.

Exploration. Dialogue. Collaboration.

Organized by Mastercard Foundation Scholars at McGill University with support from Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at McGill University, the McGill Africa Umoja Summit brings together students, scholars, experts, and community leaders for dynamic interdisciplinary dialogue. The Summit serves as a hub for culturally grounded knowledge‑sharing, meaningful exchange, and collaborative problem‑solving aimed at advancing positive impact across the African continent.

The word Umoja,” meaning unity in Swahili, embodies the collaborative spirit at the heart of this gathering. It reflects the Summit’s mission to connect the Montréal ecosystem with changemakers and those committed to Africa’s development. Rooted in this spirit of unity, the Summit bridges ideas, sparks collaboration, and fosters partnerships that drive transformative change.

The Summit unfolds over two days. On April 30, 2026, it opens with the Sankofa Challenge, a trivia experience that invites participants into collective learning rooted in African history, culture, science, and innovation.

On May 1, 2026, the main conference convenes thought leaders, youth innovators, scholars, and community builders for panels, keynote conversations, and interactive sessions. Together, these experiences cultivate an Africa‑centred space that elevates lived experiences, honours intellectual traditions, and champions youth leadership in shaping sustainable global futures.

Conference Theme

The Umoja Summit 2026 is themed, Sankofa Rising: Reclaiming African Knowledge to Shape Global Futures. “Sankofa,” a Ghanaian concept meaning “to go back and fetch it,” reminds us that the wisdom of the past is essential for building the future. Rooted in this philosophy, the 2026 Umoja Summit theme recognizes that African ancestral and traditional knowledge systems are not relics of history, they are living, dynamic sources of insight capable of addressing today’s global challenges.

Rather than conforming to Eurocentric norms or assimilation narratives, this Summit places African epistemologies at the center, affirming the value of Africa’s lived experiences, cultural heritage, and intellectual traditions. By looking back with purpose, participants are invited to reclaim indigenous wisdom and community-rooted knowledge as powerful foundations for innovation, leadership, and global transformation.

Through dialogue, collaboration, and creative exchange, Sankofa Rising calls on a new generation of changemakers to draw strength from Africa’s past to shape a more just, sustainable, and inclusive global future.
