SSCOW's Terms of Reference were revised in 2023, and approved by the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee (EDIC) on February 5, 2024.
Mandate and Authority
The Subcommittee’s mandate is to advance equality and inclusion of women and gender-diverse individuals, including those intersecting with other identity factors, in the academic and workplace community at McGill University. The Subcommittee will make recommendations to the Joint Board-Senate Committee of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDIC) on the following topics:
1) Advocacy for Gender Equality
- Provide positive action regarding gender diversity in employment and promotion at McGill University.
- Promote salary and pension equity across all gender identities.
- Monitor representation of gender diversity on university committees and in administrative positions.
- Monitor university policy and practices for the communities we represent.
- Provide advocacy for problems in obtaining research funding due to gender discrimination.
- Strengthen the role of women and gender minorities attending or employed by the University.
2) Initiation and Consolidation of Activities Contributing to the Improvement in the Status and Treatment of Women and Gender-diverse people
- Provide support and offer advice as needed for activities pursued by students or staff members identifying as women or gender minorities.
- Collaborate with the Institute for Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies (IGSF) when there are issues of mutual interest.
- Promote community efforts to address systemic barriers perpetuating gender inequality.
3) Liaison and Networking
- Assist in sponsoring conferences on issues pertinent to gender diversity in academia or in the workplace.
- Connect with other women’s organization and equality-seeking groups within the university, and/or at regional and national organizational levels.
