AGENDA – Day 1 – Arts Building Room 150 (unless otherwise noted)
8:30 am – Arts 150 Coffee and Light Snacks |
9:00 Territorial Welcome / Conference Objectives Welcome & Land Acknowledgment Exercise |
10:00 – 10:30 Experiential Learning Session 1 – Transforming how we think about Projects in Engineering Education: From Project Management to Project Leadership In engineering programs project management training tends to focus heavily on management activities and less on the leadership skills that are necessary to effectively manage projects and teams. This session will focus on how to tip this balance to ensure engineering students can be project leaders. (Elisabeth Gilmore & William Macgillivray – Carleton University) |
10:30 – 11:30 Experiential Learning Session 2 – How to Introduce Followership to Students When employers complain that our students need more “leadership” skills, in many cases they are often telling us that students need stronger followership skills. This session will dive into how to introduce and develop followership with our students. (Marc Hurwitz – University of Waterloo) |
11:30-11:45 Break |
11:45-12:45 Best Practices and Biggest Challenges 1 – Unconference Parallel sessions with topics defined and hosted by participants |
12:45 – 1:30 Lunch |
1:30 – 3:00 – Parallel Sessions round 1 These sessions will be run twice, allowing participants to attend both sessions |
Experiential Learning Session 3 – Voices from the Heart: A trauma-informed and wisdom-inspired approach to wellness and thriving in engineering education – Arts 150 This session will involve a guided activity that will include a mindfulness exercise to slow down, to center, and to bring awareness to the present; an intention-setting exercise to connect to the group and to our deeper selves and a facilitated circle to allow participants to surface and share the deeper visions and voices needing to be heard on the topic of education innovation. (Kai Zhuang – York University & Dimpho Radebe – University of Toronto) |
Best Practices and Biggest Challenges 2 – Engineering Leadership Case Studies – Arts W-120 This session will have participants use a short case study format to document engineering leadership activities at their institutions. A community of Canadian leadership educators are looking to compile, reflect and publish case studies from across the country to better understand and characterize engineering leadership development in Canada. (Grant McSorley – University of Prince Edward Island & Jonathan Verrett – University of British Columbia) |
3:00 – 3:15 Break |
3:15 – 4:45 Parallel Sessions round 2 – See session descriptions above |

9:00 – 10:30 Panel – Leadership in Engineering: Designing the Future In this moderated panel discussion, hear from leaders in industry, governance and academia as they share their perspectives on leadership in engineering and answer questions from the audience. |
10:30-10:45 Break |
10:45 – 12:15 Best Practices and Biggest Challenges 3 – Modern Multidisciplinary Design This session will discuss the need for modern multidisciplinary design programs. We will consider required elements and components for graduating technology-adept students who are prepared to take on grand multidisciplinary design challenges. The relationship to traditional engineering approaches and the new challenges that surface in forming community cohesion will be explored so that EDI in multidisciplinary communities can be celebrated. (Hanan Anis, David Bruce, Patrick Dumond, Jason Foster, David Knox – University of Ottawa) |
12:15-1:00 Lunch |
1:00-2:30 – Experiential Learning 4 – Design Your Life "You can't know where you're going until you know where you are.” In this session, you will participate and reflect on the Designing Your Life process and philosophy. Through practical applications, you will learn how to facilitate and integrate design thinking activities within a classroom setting or co-curricular experience. (Jennifer Galley – University of Toronto) |
