Our research is directed at understanding the normal biology of kidney cells and pathophysiological changes in immunological disorders and inflammation. We focus on signal transduction pathways that are involved in mediation of renal cell growth, or cell injury. Faculty members are active in basic and clinical research. Basic research areas include studies into mediators of immune renal injury (complement, lipid mediators, cytokines and signal transduction), renal cell growth, and physiology of urinary sodium retention. Clinical research includes studies on erythropoietin in end stage renal disease, management of end stage renal disease, epidemiology of chronic kidney disease, and treatment strategies for atherosclerosis in end stage renal disease.
