A tree that most everyone knows and loves. The sugar maple is the source of maple syrup, and has bright orange foliage in the fall. It does not like the rigours of life as an urban street tree, and the very similar looking Norway maple, which can withstand more pollution, is often planted instead. Unfortunately, Norway maple is an invasive species, negatively impacting the biodiversity of the forests it moves into, and efforts lead by Les amis de la montagne are underway to remove it from Mont Royal Park, and to establish native trees in its place.
