NCD Research Grants for Graduate Students
The GNCDA NCD Research Grants are designed to support graduate students living in or interested in working with resource-limited communities, who wish to conduct a research project on noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) in their community or in underserved populations elsewhere.
Applicants need to submit a scientific project which can be accomplished in one (1) year. The proposal should demonstrate how this research will add to current evidence on NCD control, which includes healthcare access and delivery for people living with NCDs. The proposal should be feasible given the funds provided, justified by its potential impact in the community and demonstrate clear and realistic outcome measures with an effective dissemination plan.
Research submitted for funding consideration must be conducted under the supervision of a faculty member of the applicant's institution, with the supervisor’s approval given prior to the application. Non-McGill applicants may choose to identify a McGill supervisor to support their research project. Having a McGill sponsor is optional to non-McGill applicants. Additionally, all applicants should seek a local partner that can provide expertise and assistance in the proposed research area and settings. The local partner should be recognized in the research site and be able and willing to spend time assisting the project team. A letter of support from the local partner is needed.
The research proposals will be particularly assessed for their novelty, practicability, relevance to NCD control and evidence-based rationale. Competitive preference will be given to applications that 1) foster interdisciplinary research and 2) actively involve the study population.
The submissions will be independently reviewed by the program grants committee. Grant recipients may require ethics approval from the applicant’s local institution and/or McGill University Health Centre Review Ethics Board. The grant recipients will be expected to submit a report of the project to the GNCDA within three (3) months of research completion. Recipients will give credit to the GNCDA on any publication arising from the work done with this grant and will be invited to share their results with the GNCDA program committee.
We welcome applications from a variety of disciplines that represent the diversity of the global health field. This includes, but is not limited to, medicine, nursing, health sciences, nutrition, rehabilitation, law, social sciences, engineering, epidemiology, population and public health, and health policy.
Please note that only one proposal submission across our grant types is allowed per applicant. This means that applicants can only make one proposal submission to either the NCD research, Micro-research and NCD Challenge grant categories. Applicants with multiple submissions will be disqualified.

Eligibility
The applicant must:

Be registered to a graduate degree program.

Have at least 1 academic term before program completion.

Be proficient in either French, English or both. Although the application form is developed in English, the application can be submitted in either English or French.
How to apply?
Applicants are required to complete an online form requesting the following information:
- Research proposal (maximum 3 pages not including references and appendices). To help guide your submission, the research proposal guidelines are provided here. The following appendices must be included in the proposal:
- An approximate one-year timeline listing the research steps that need to be accomplished and the estimated duration (e.g., ethics approval, personnel training, recruitment and follow-up, analysis of data, report and presentation of data) (maximum 1 page).
- A tabulated budget breakdown listing and justifying the itemized project expenses of up to CAD$3,000 (e.g., personnel hired, services required, non-reusable and reusable equipment and materials). If you expect support from another funder, please indicate the funds expected and the source/funder (maximum 1 page)
- CV of applicant (maximum 2 pages).
- Description of significance of applicant’s previous research contributions, career aspirations and rationale for the decision to perform a research project on NCDs (maximum 1 page).
- CV of supervisor (CCV if McGill supervisor).
- Applicant’s proof of enrollment in an educational institution for a graduate degree program, signed by an authorized member of the institution, usually the Registrar or Departmental head. (An official letter from the Registrar or Departmental head; letter of admission; unofficial transcript, etc.) The document should state the applicant’s program, current year and the program duration.
- Official letter of support from applicant’s supervisor (maximum 1 page).
- Official letter of support from applicant’s local partner (maximum 1 page).
- Official letter of support from McGill sponsor, if applicable (maximum 1 page).
Note: Files should be named using this format: “Applicant’s last name_document type.” Example: “Ofili_Proof of enrollment.” Acceptable file types are .doc, .docx, and .pdf. All the documents should be single-spaced with the specified page limits respected. Incomplete applications and applications not following the stipulated guidelines will NOT be considered. Lastly, to access the form, applicants must log in to a google account.
