Quick Facts
What is the focus of the program?
The Graduate Award Program (GAP) provides graduate students with the skills needed to bridge the gap between research and practice, and experience in communicating research findings across disciplines. Participants in the GAP will gain a deep understanding of the role of evidence in policy creation and develop practical skills to increase the policy relevance and impact of their own research.
Who is it for?
We look for outstanding graduate students whose current or proposed dissertation topics are interdisciplinary and related to understanding how social conditions impact population health and welfare. Ideal candidates see immense value in expanding the impact of their research and are motivated to acquire new skills that will empower them to do so.
What do students do?
- Attend biweekly seminars at the School of Population and Global Health (2001 McGill College). The seminar series focuses on the role of evidence in policy creation, the pluralistic perspectives that go into policy making, and knowledge mobilization.
- Present your research to the other students and Faculty in the Department of Equity, Ethics and Policy community, highlighting opportunities for policy impact.
- Use student work space at the SPGH (encouraged).
Where and when does it take place?
Seminars and presentations take place at the School of Population and Global Health (2001 McGill College) from September to April. Classrooms at the SPGH have the capacity to host hybrid meetings, so there is a possibility that seminars may be delivered partially in-person and partially remotely, or that certain seminars will take place fully remotely.
How much is the award?
Participants receive a $4000 award.
How many awards are available?
6-8 fellowships are awarded per year.
Program Description
The Graduate Award Program at the Institute for Health and Social Policy (IHSP) provides graduate students with the skills needed to bridge the gap between research and practice. It is open to outstanding graduate students whose current or proposed dissertation topics are interdisciplinary and connected to understanding how social conditions impact population health and welfare.
Through seminars and workshops held every two weeks, students will enhance their knowledge of research in health and social policy across disciplines and develop communication skills to share research findings to a wide audience. Each student will present their work to an interdisciplinary cohort and gain expert advice and feedback from a diverse group of researchers. Students are encouraged to use office space available at the School of Population and Global Health.
