Sleep disorders an daytime performance with emphasis on observational studies. Specific outcomes include self-rated sleepiness, driving behaviour and motor vehicle crashes. Other interests include sleep satisfaction and sexual dysfunction. Pharmacoepidemiology of hip fractures, cataracts, asthma deaths and myocardial infarction. Clinical research in respiratory rehabilitation.

Methodological developments in health technology assessment — in particular in the design of economic models and related analytic techniques — and on the application of epidemiologic principles to this maturing field.

Jean-Pierre Gauvin, MSc.A., CIH , ROH , EP, (R) CRPA is CEO of Contex environment, an important advisory group active in all regions of Canada. He is certified by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene , Canadian Registry Board of Occupational Hygienists and the Canadian Bureau for recognition of environmental specialists. He is active in the development of standards of practices and environmental quality control procedures. As a certified professional in environment (EP), Certified Industrial Hygienist by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (CIH ), the Canadian Registry Board of Occupational Hygienists (ROH) and Registered Radiation Safety Professional (R)CRPA he adheres to a strict code of ethics.

My research interests focus on the etiology of obesity, its metabolic and cardiovascular consequences, and their prevention in various populations, including healthy children, as well as children with diabetes mellitus. I am particularly interested in the influence of lifestyle habits on metabolic health in youth. Understanding how physical activity, sedentary behaviour, diet and sleep influence metabolic health is critical to developing effective preventive strategies for clinical practice and public health alike. I am also interested in the evaluation of such novel strategies in the prevention or treatment of cardiovascular disease risk in childhood.

Statistical methodologies for public health surveillance, and application to public health policy-making.  Measures of population health, health forecasting analyses and methodology.  Current projects: improving the bias and efficiency properties of the life expectancy estimator for small populations, projection analyses of obesity prevalence, projection analyses of cancer mortality and incidence
