Emerging Leaders Award 2025

Decorative photo, lightbulb with objects floating around itThe McGill energy Emerging Leaders Award provides PhD students and Postdoctoral researchers with the opportunity to design and supervise a summer research project for an undergraduate student. This initiative encourages innovative, cross-disciplinary research related to energy while fostering leadership and mentorship skills among McGill energy Trainees.

A minimum of 2 McGill energy (PhD or Postdoctoral) can propose a project related to energy that can be completed by an undergraduate student during the summer of 2025.

The research theme can be complementary to the Trainees’ thesis work or a divergent question they are eager to address.

The undergraduate cannot be hired as part of a current project or to contribute to the Trainees’ core research work.

There is no limit to the scope of the project, but proposals will be evaluated based on originality, feasibility, cross disciplinarity and alignment with McGill energy’s mission.

Funding

  • Full time undergraduate student will receive $9,500 for the 14-week (full time 33.75 hr/week) internship. If the student is working part time, the stipend will be adjusted accordingly.
  • PhD / Postdoc will receive $2,000 each over the course of the internship.
  • Funding for expenses and materials is available, please provide an estimate in your application.

Eligibility

  • Must be PhD student or Postdoctoral researcher (min. 2) who are members of McGill energy.
  • Research project needs to be approved by the Trainees’ supervisors.
  • The project must be energy related.
  • We highly encourage building cross-disciplinary teams.

Conditions

  • Monthly follow up: The McGill energy graduate student supervisors and the undergraduate intern will meet with McGill energy staff once a month to discuss project advancement and receive feedback.
  • Ongoing mentoring: The McGill energy graduate student supervisors and the undergraduate intern will meet regularly to facilitate effective mentorship.
  • Deliverables: The intern will write a report about their project and present a poster at the McGill energy Interconnect Conference during the Fall 2025 semester.
  • Visibility: The title and description of the project may be posted on the McGill energy website and included in the annual report.
  • Feedback: Once the project is completed, the undergraduate student and the McGill energy graduate student supervisors will need to complete a short survey about the experience.
