Research Project:

The onset of climate change calls for the transition of today’s energy systems away from fossil fuels towards renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar. However, renewable energy sources are intermittent, such that the development of clean energy carriers is necessary for their widescale deployment. These energy carriers must be capable of storing energy from renewables where and when it is available, and releasing it on-demand at the desired location, in a clean, zero-carbon process. The usage of reduction-oxidation (redox) cycles of iron particles has been proposed for this purpose. Joel’s research focuses on enabling this technology through an investigation of the fundamental combustion dynamics of iron particles, as well as the plasma-assisted direct reduction of iron ore with hydrogen.
