Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning System (HVAC) Upgrade Project, McIntyre 14th floor
(10 phases)
JULY 14, 2020
With the re-opening Phases of the University, I’m pleased to announce the start of Phase 3 of the Animal Centre HVAC Renovation.
This includes rooms 1422, 1422A, 1422B, 1423 and 1424.
Preparations to the areas have commenced and this phase is estimated to be completed by early October, 2020.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me, Jeff Miles at 514-222-1764.
FEBRUARY 25, 2020 UPDATE
Phase 2 of the renovation project (rooms 1421,1421D,1421E ) is coming to an imminent close and phase 3 (rooms 1422, 1422 A+B, 1423, 1424) will start in the coming few weeks.
In between the close and the start up of phases we will be shifting animals between rooms to accommodate the HVAC construction. Those labs who are impacted by this will be contacted personally. Otherwise, it is business as usual!
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us.
SEPTEMBER 11, 2019 UPDATE
The HVAC Project is continuing. The next three weeks will see a buzz of activity.
The week of September 9-13, 2019
Will see the installation of new ducts in the NE quadrant of the 14th floor corridor from rooms 1429 to 1433. Rooms will still be accessible with the help of construction staff to guide you. These installs will incur several short 30-60 minute reductions to 50% in air flow while the temporary ductwork is un-hooked and the new sections activated.
A small amount of plumbing will take place in the central hallway but should not interfere with access.
The week of September 16-20, 2019
Will involve the demolition of old ductwork in the SE section of the corridor between 1433 and 1424.
On the 16th there will be a reduction of the HVAC system to 50% of efficiency between 07:00 and 15:00 hrs. while the temporary ducts are installed.
For the remainder of the week the old ductwork will be demolished. Expect increased levels of noise and a reduced passage in that section. Once again access is available to the rooms with escort from the construction foremen.
Plumbing work may continue in the central corridor if it has not already been completed.
The week of September 23-27, 2019
Will see the installation of new ducts in the SE quadrant of the 14th floor corridor from rooms 1433 to 1424. Rooms will still be accessible with the help of construction staff to guide you. These installs will incur several short 30-60 minute reductions to 50% in air flow while the temporary ductwork is un-hooked and the new sections activated.
Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns.
FEBRUARY 22, 2019 UPDATE
Ventilation shutdown on February 27, 2019 from 7:00am to 1:00pm.
The exhaust of the ventilation system of floors 14, 15 and 15M will be shut down to allow connection of temporary ventilation ducts to the existing system.
The evacuation system will stay functional at 30% to allow air exchange in the rooms affected.
To compensate any heat loss during this shutdown, heaters were installed in the rooms occupied by animals and an HVAC technician will be on site to regulate the temperature .
Ventilation water heating system shutdown on March 2, 2019 from 5:00am to 10:00am
The water heating system of the McIntyre Medical Building's ventilation will need to be shut down.
This will allow the plumbers to install two valves on the 14th floor (one in room 1433 and in 1426A) that will isolate the ventilation heating water conducts of that floor from the rest of the building when needed.
These two valves will then be used during the construction phase of the project to avoid shutting down the entire building’s ventilation water heating system every time a modification needs to be done. To maintain the proper temperature in the animal rooms, heaters were installed and an HVAC technician will be on site to regulate the temperature.
DECEMBER 21, 2018 UPDATE
As the year closes out I am pleased to announce that we have achieved our demolition and asbestos removal goals that were set out for this year.
Tunnels are removed and the ceilings demolished.
Starting in the week of January 7, 2019, and continuing for several weeks, the next phase of the HVAC project will commence. This will involve many aspects from some internal wall demolition and temporary HVAC installation to electrical, plumbing and mechanical work.
This will take place primarily inside the central rooms- 1429 through 1436- which have been vacated since the beginning of the project. New trades will be introduced as the work continues and we will see workers and materials entering and exiting the facility.
Noise tests have already been conducted to assess the decibel levels of this next phase and all returned with favourable results.
We will continue to keep you updated as the project moves forward and as usual please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions.
