CENTECH, a Montreal-based technology incubator, announced earlier that it has selected a company founded by Dr. Etienne de Villers-Sidani for its Propulsion Program, which helps the most innovative start-ups move from the initial development phase to commercializing their products and services on the international market. Dr. de Villers-Sidani is a researcher and neurologist at Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital (The Neuro) and member of the Center for Research on Brain, Language and Music (CRBLM).

The Healthy Brains for Healthy Lives (HBHL) initiative is happy to announce the launch of its Neuro-Innovation Fund. HBHL’s Neuro-Innovation Fund aims to close the gap between proof-of-concept research grants, and funding from traditional investors (angels, venture capitalist, institutional investors). The Fund will provide technology development grants to support further proof of principle and/or add value to new technologies or inventions related to the research themes of HBHL.

Healthy Brains for Healthy Lives (HBHL), in conjunction with Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, is proud to announce the launch of its 2018 Graduate Student Fellowships competition. This competition aims to attract, train and retain top students at the graduate level from across disciplines and around the world to participate in interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral research training opportunities related to brain and mental health research, knowledge translation/mobilization and innovation.

Ottawa has announced a new fund to connect all Canadian brain scientists. Earlier this week, the first HBHL-SKILLSETS workshop was held. The workshop, entitled Increase Your Impact: Sharing neuroscience research with diverse audiences, was facilitated by Falisha Karpati (Program Officer, Healthy Brains for Healthy Lives) and John Van Heest (Communications Administrator, Teaching and Learning Services). Graduate students and postdoctoral fellows from all around McGill joined us to learn about research dissemination methods, and making neuroscience content accessible and engaging for different audiences.

The Society for Neuroscience (SfN) course was spear-headed by Dr. Jane Roskams, and included world-renowned experts in neuroinformatics showcasing their tools and datasets. Dr. JB Poline, a new MNI faculty member and HBHL hire, discussed the need for data publishing and the Canadian Open Neuroscience Platform, as well as data and compute management software that will eventually comprise the backbone of NeuroHub - namely, CBRAIN and LORIS.

Initiated more than 10 years ago by a collaboration between the McGill Centre for Integrative Neuroscience in Montreal, Canada and the Jülich Research Centre in Germany, the BigBrain atlas is the highest-resolution 3D digital map of the human brain produced to date. The atlas was painstakingly reconstructed from 7404 separate sections of a human brain.

March 26 is Purple Day for Epilepsy, a day to support epilepsy awareness worldwide
The Neuro has been a world leader in epilepsy treatment and research for more than 60 years. Indeed, the “Montreal Procedure” developed by The Neuro’s founder, Dr. Wilder Penfield, and his colleagues has become the standard operating procedure for the surgical treatment of epilepsy. The Neuro was also a pioneering institute in exploiting electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to study and treat epilepsy.
