McGill University hosted its annual Bravo Gala on Thursday, March 27, celebrating research excellence and recognizing faculty members and researchers who have received awards, memberships, and prizes over the past year.

Congratulations go to Professor Odile Liboiron-Ladouceur, who has been awarded the recognition of Photonics100 of 2025.
Congratulations to Samuel Dayo, Ataollah Saeed Monir, Mousa Karimi, and Professor Boris Vaisband on their paper titled "Statistical Weight Refresh System for CTT-Based Synaptic Arrays." The paper was presented at the ACM/IEEE Great Lakes Symposium on VLSI 2023. We are proud to announce that their work received the second-place Best Poster/Late Breaking Research (LBR) Award. ACM/IEEE GLSVLSI showcases cutting-edge research and innovations in VLSI design and provides a platform for experts to exchange knowledge and foster collaboration.
We are proud to announce that Yousef Safari, a PhD candidate in our Department, is the recipient of the prestigious IEEE Electronic Packaging Society (EPS) PhD Fellowship for 2023. Yousef’s work in large-scale heterogeneous integration has earned him this honor. We congratulate him on this well-deserved recognition and look forward to witnessing his continued success in the field.

Congratulations go to Professor François Bouffard, who is the winner of this year’s Faculty of Engineering Outstanding Academic Service Award. The award speaks to the impact Professor Bouffard has had on the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) community, recognizing his continuing dedication to the students as well as his commitment and contribution to student affairs in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
Congratulations to Professor Amin Emad of ECE and his team, who won the Omics Data Against Cancer (ODAC) competition to develop AI models to predict response to drug combinations in poor-outcome cancer patients.

Congratulations to Professors Tal Arbel and Christophe Dubach who has just been named as two of the outstanding researchers to join the prestigious CIFAR AI Program, the goal of which is to "recruit and retain in Canada some of the world's leading researchers in AI and provide them with long-term, dedicated research funding to support their research programs, and to help them train the next generation of AI leaders" (
ECE Professor Tal Arbel recently presented research at the “AI and the Future of Cancer Research” (From the Goodman Cancer Research Centre’s Public Lecture Series).
Professor Arbel spoke about Artificial Intelligence (AI) and specifically her research focus on computer vision, already showing clinical success in the fields of brain tumours and multiple sclerosis.
The Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering would like to introduce Boris Vaisband, Assistant Professor, joining us from the University of California, Los Angeles. Professor Vaisband obtained his PhD from the University of Rochester. He is joining the Integrated Circuits & Systems Group.

Congratulations to PhD candidate Farhad Shokraneh for receiving the Best Paper Award at the Asia Communications and Photonics Conference in October 2018. The paper, entitled “A 4x4 Reconfigurable Optical Processor” is co-authored by Mr. Shokraneh’s supervisor, Professor Odile Liboiron-Ladouceur, and Reza Nezami, Ph.D., and are the latest results of a project funded by the FRQNT Équipe programme “Accélérateur Photonique Embarqué pour Algorithmes d’Apprentissage Profond”.

Congratulations to Mr. Srinivas Vanka, Ph.D. Student under the supervision of Professor Ishiang Shih (and former ECE Professor Zetian Mi) who was awarded the Best Presentation Award at Symposium NM7—Semiconductor Nanowires for Energy Applications for his presentation titled "An InGaN Nanowire/Si Tandem Photoanode for High‐Efficiency Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting".
