The notion of autopsy (from the Ancient Greek autos and opsis: to see for oneself) designates the prime operation in the development of knowledge. Even though the common meaning of autopsy, that of cadaveric examinations, only becomes lexicalized in the 19th century, the word is diversely used in history, religion, medicine and philosophy.
