The Schulich School of Music at McGill University welcomes an international array of guest artists and student ensembles for the Musical Chairs Chamber Music Festival, two packed weeks of workshops, masterclasses, and performances – all open to the public. Every week, the Schulich School of Music sees musicians from all over Montreal come together to learn about the music of Brazil. In a ten-week free workshop directed by guitarist Rodrigo Simões (through support of Schulich's Jazz Performance and Music Education areas), a group of over 20 participants has the chance to learn the ins-and-outs of samba, Baiaõ and maxixe on their main instruments, as well as perform supporting roles on a variety of percussion instruments.

Simone McIntosh (M.Mus 2017) continues her streak of successes with an upcoming appearance singing the title role in Rossini's "La Cenerentola." The production, which will be put on by Vancouver Opera in the spring, will be McIntosh's first mainstage appearance in a lead role.
After graduating from Schulich (where she won the 2016 Wirth Vocal Prize), she has gone on to work in the Canadian Opera Company's Studio Ensemble for the 2017/18 season, among other notable national appearances.

Congratulations are in order for Claire de Sévigné (B.Mus 2009), who will appear in the Canadian Opera Company's production of Mozart's The Abduction from the Seraglio as character Blonde. The coloratura soprano was profiled last week in the Globe and Mail, where she outlines the demands of singing such a challenging role.

An exciting new exhibit can be explored through the Marvin Duchow Library at McGill University – "Women, Work and Song in Nineteeth-Century France."
The exhibit explores the evolving role of women in the popular song industry of the era, and includes many pieces from the 19th-century French sheet music collection of the Library.

In a recent CBC Music feature article, Opera McGill alumni Lara Ciekiewicz (M.Mus 2008) discussed five pieces that influenced her, including pieces by Dvorák, Stephen Fearing and more.
Those looking to hear Ciekiewicz live will soon have a chance, as she will make her debut performance as Tatyana in Calgary Opera's production of Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin, which begins February 3.

Dr. Huntington (Skip) Sheldon (1930-2018) was an iconic figure in the history of the Schulich School of Music and McGill University as a whole. In addition to a long teaching legacy in the Faculty of Medicine, he made significant contributions to the university as a philanthropist. As a result of Dr. Sheldon's generous donations, the Redpath organ was constructed and installed, and the project to build the Elizabeth Wirth Music Building was launched.
In addition, Dr. Sheldon served on the Music Facutly's advisory board for many years.

As part of the 6th annual Virée Classique by the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal (OSM) on August 12, 2017, Schulich School of Music bassoon faculty members Stéphane Lévesque and Martin Mangrum took part in the world premiere of Simon Leclerc's 'Concerto Grosso for Five Bassoons, Contrabassoon, Strings and Timpani', along with OSM bassoon colleagues and guest bassoonist Carlo Colombo of the Lyon Opera Orchestra.
