Goodwin nets hat-trick as Redmen clip Ravens, win fifth straight.

Published: 24 September 2011

MONTREAL -- Freshman Connor Goodwin of New Westminster, B.C., scored a hat-trick and added an assist as the McGill men's varsity lacrosse team crushed Carleton 13-6 at Molson Stadium, Saturday.

It was the fifth consecutive victory for the Redmen, who sit atop the Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association standings with a perfect 5-0 record. McGill has a six-point lead over second-place Bishop's (2-1), which has two games in hand.

The Ravens led 3-2 after one quarter and 5-4 at halftime but McGill stormed back in the second half, outscoring Carleton 9-1 to seal the win.

"Carleton played a scrappy first half while the we seemed challenged to find our  game," said McGill head coach Tim Murdoch."The turning point was our defence, which was anchored by spirited play from defensive midfielder, Ossie Long (Sarnia, Ont.), who retrieved a ground ball late in the game when short-handed that converted into a goal for us."

Teammates Antoine Champagne of Montreal, Jishan Sharples of Vancouver, B.C., and Nolan Prinzen, from Summit, N.J., each scored twice for the Redmen. Rounding out the scoring was Leland de Langley of Orangeville, Ont.,  J.J. Miller of Odenton, Md., Alex Rohrbach of Princeton Junction, N.J., and Mike Ting of Sudbury, Mass.

Miller completely dominated on face-offs, winning 16 out of 17 draws to secure multiple, crucial possessions for the Redmen.

Carleton's scoring was led by veteran Raj Wasson and Shane Davidson of Oshawa, Ont., each of whom tallied twice. Singles went to Curtis Singleton and Elliot Marshall.

McGill freshman Riley McGillis of Peterborough, Ont., earned the start in goal and registered his second win in as many starts, stopping numerous Ravens shot from point-blank range.

McGill travels to play on a neutral field in Nepean, Ont., on Sept. 29 at 8:30 p.m. for a rematch against Carleton, before returning home to face Toronto at Molson Stadium on Oct. 1 in a 5 p.m.

REDMEN RAP: After the win over Carleton, the Redmen played a 24-man alumni squad and prevailed 16-6 in a shortened 60-minute, Homecoming "friendly". McGill captain Ryan Besse exploded for 10 goals. Others inscribed on the scoresheet included Antoine Champagne (2 goals), plus Ben Uveges, Olivier Charbonneau, Zach Corriveau-Winquist and Connor Goodwin... The Alumni squad was paced by two goals from Alex Kruse of Oakville, Ont., as well as markers from Alex Bates of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., Deacon Blue of Hopkinton, N.H., Noah Miller of Burlington, Vt., and Keith Thomas of Chicago, Ill. Guy Fox, McGill's 2010 MVP and co-captain, took the loss for the Alumni side, while McGill's goaltending duties were split by Simon Hudson of Seattle, Wash., and Jamie Spagnuolo of Burnaby, B.C.
