Michael McMahon receives Order of Canada

Published: 10 July 2025

Professor Michael McMahon has been appointed to the Order of Canada for his contributions in the art song and opera communities. His work as a vocal coach and collaborative pianist has left a mark on musicians nationally and internationally.

The Order of Canada, presented by the governor general, honours people who have made extraordinary contributions to the nation. Those honoured are innovators and trailblazers who, through passion for their field, have exemplified a desire to enrich the lives of others.

About the award, friend and colleague Professor Dominique Labelle says:

“Michael McMahon is a treasure, an inspiration, and one of the most precious mentors I know. He keeps inspiring young singers, showing them the holiness of song literature, and has done so for over forty years, with remarkable grace, love, and a deep knowledge of Art Song. What he gives and shares with students, pianists and singers alike, remains with them forever. I am very proud of Michael, as my former teacher and current colleague, as he receives this important honour.”
