Published: 26 October 2010

MONTREAL - Forward Francis Verreault-Paul of the McGill men's hockey team is the De Facto Quebec university male athlete of the week for the period ending Oct. 24, 2010.

He is the fourth McGill student to be named conference athlete of the week by the newly-named Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec. Previous McGill recipients include hockey player Alex Picard-Hooper (Oct. 16), cross-country runner Sarah McCuaig (Sept. 20) and soccer star Alexandra Morin-Boucher (Sept. 13).

Verreault-Paul, a 5-foot-10, 180-pound all-Canadian winger from Mashteuiatsh, Que., scored nine goals, including a pair of game-winners, and added an assist in three games, all victories by the No.2-ranked Redmen, and now leads the CIS national scoring race with 16 points, including 10 goals, in six games.

A 23-year-old science junior, majoring in kinesiology and psychology, Verreault-Paul scored four markers in a 7-1 win over Queen's last Saturday, after netting a hat-trick in a 9-0 conquest over RMC the previous night. He also tallied twice along with a helper in a 6-3 victory over UQTR earlier in the week.

Verreault-Paul, who joined the Redmen in 2008 after playing in the QMJHL with Lewiston and Chicoutimi, hails from an Innu community on the western shores of Lac St. Jean, Que. He is a graduate of College de Chicoutimi.

The Quebec female honoree this week was Laval rugby player Mackenzie Stairs, who scored a pair of tries, leading the Rouge et Or to a 36-18 playoff victory over McGill.

De Facto is an innovative tobacco prevention campaign led by Sport Etudiant, geared towards  eliminating smoking among young adults and revealing the truth about the consequences of using tobacco.
