$1,000,000 to support leadership initiatives at the Desautels Faculty of Management

McGill University today announced the donation of $1 million by TD Bank Financial Group to establish the TD Fund for Leadership at the Desautels Faculty of Management. The Fund will support the MBA Global Leadership Seminar and the Undergraduate Leadership Seminar – two key programs designed to promote leadership through collaboration and foster personal reflection and responsibility by exploring management processes for leading people and organizations.

“At TD, we believe we have a responsibility to cultivate leaders who, in addition to being strong contributors in the business world, will also have training that will add to the long-term vibrancy of our communities,” said Bernard Dorval, Group Head Business Banking and Co-Chair, TD Canada Trust. “We’re confident that our donation to the Desautels Faculty of Management at McGill will ensure students are participating in seminars that are part of a truly world-class program.”

TD Bank Financial Group will commit $100,000 per year for 10 years in support of the seminars, which are part of a comprehensive initiative to develop integrated management at the Desautels Faculty. The MBA Global Leadership Seminar includes guest speakers from academia and industry and was developed by Desautels Professor Nancy Adler, who is well known for research in global leadership, cross-cultural management and women as global leaders and managers. The Undergraduate Leadership Seminar is a student-led initiative that targets first-year Desautels students.

“It gives me great pleasure to announce this gift from TD Bank Financial Group,” said Peter Todd, Dean of the Desautels Faculty of Management at McGill University. “Providing leadership training for our graduate and undergraduate students is an important part of our mission to educate the next generation of business leaders. We hope these funds will inspire all students to reach even higher, both academically and personally, so they can lead and drive positive change in business and society both locally and internationally.”

Children’s health, literacy and education, and the environment are the three primary areas of focus for TD’s community giving. The major flagship programs within these areas are: TD Children’s Hospital Fund, TD Friends of the Environment Foundation and the TD Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, TD Canadian Children’s Book Week, TD Canada Trust Scholarships for Community Leadership, and the TD Summer Reading Club. In addition, through the support of its customers and employees, TD is involved with a host of national, regional and local programs in support of diversity, arts and culture and other causes. In 2007, TD donated $33 million to more than 2,000 charities and not-for-profit organizations across Canada.

McGill University, which is ranked by the Times Higher Education Supplement as the 12th best university in the world, has offered commerce courses for more than 100 years.
