Spartans rally to upend McGill women in exhibition soccer

LANGLEY, B.C. - Midfielder Jessica King scored the game-winner midway through the second half as the Trinity Western University Spartans rallied for a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over visiting McGill in women's preseason soccer at TWU's Rogers Park, Friday.
Forward Daniella Gerig opened the scoring for the Spartans in the 16th minute on a play set up by midfielder Melissa Mobillio who broke into the open, down the left side of the pitch, and sent a cross to Gerig at the top of the penalty area. Gerig controlled the ball, took a touch to get by McGill goalkeeper Victoria Muccilli of Mississauga, Ont., and slotted the ball into the open net.
The Marlets tied the match on a pretty counter-attack five minutes later, when freshman Alexandria Hoyte of Laval, Que., sent Montreal native Alexandra Morin-Boucher in alone with a nice chip over the Spartan back line. The veteran McGill striker sent the ball high over TWU 'keeper Cara Santaga and into the top right corner of the Spartans net.
TWU controlled much of the play in the first half and if not for three spectacular point-blank saves by Muccilli, the Spartan could have taken a multi-goal lead into the intermission.
The tables were turned in the second half, however, as Santaga stood on her head to keep the Martlets from scoring, coming up with three big saves to thwart McGill. The Martlets efforts were finally rewarded in the 69th minute, however. Morin-Boucher took a hard shot from the centre of the box that Santaga stopped but was unable to corral. The rebound went to defender Kathleen Wakeling of Edmonton, who lofted a high volley into the net to give McGill a 2-1 lead.
The goal woke the Spartans up and Melissa Mobilio knotted the score less than a minute later. She took a through ball up the middle from Natalie Boyd, broke into the centre of the box, and neatly sent the ball to the top right corner to tie the score with 20 minutes remaining.
King's winner was tallied eight minutes later after a beautiful play from TWU forward Caitlin Haines, who ran hard up the left side to track down a loose ball. She centred it accross to the penalty area to a hard-charging King, who beat the back line to the ball and hammered it into the right side of the net.
Santaga made four saves to earn the win as the Spartans improved to 3-1 in preseason play. Muccilli was credited with five saves and took the the loss as the Martlets dropped to 2-3 overall.
Next up for the Spartans is their Canada West home opener on Sept. 10 when they host the UBC. The Martlets get an off day to before taking on the Victoria Vikes on Sunday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. (Pacific) at Rogers Park.
GAME NOTES: The Spartans outshot McGill 14-10 in total shots attempted and had an 8-6 margin in shots on goal... TWU was called for 10 offsides, while McGill had none... The Spartans committed eight fouls to the Martlets three...McGill will host the 2011 CIS women's soccer championship, Nov. 10-13, in Montreal.
