MONTREAL - Cory Marcon's early goal was all McGill needed as the No.2-ranked soccer Redmen opened their campaign by coasting to a 4-0 whitewash over visiting Sherbrooke in Quebec University Soccer League play before a crowd of 541 at Molson Stadium, Friday.

McGill dominated field position throughout and held a lopsided 18-2 margin in shots toward net.

Marcon, a third-year midfielder from Thunderhill, MD, beat bewildered Sherbrooke goalkeeper Benjamin Marquis in the 14th minute and the Redmen never looked back.

Freshman Sebastian Munro, a prized recruit from Vancouver, B.C., converted a pass from Yohann Capolungo in the 20th minute to put the Redmen ahead 2-0.

McGill took a stranglehold on the game's outcome when rookie William Hoyle of Ottawa received a pass from Olivier Babineau and fired a shot past Marquis with eight minutes remaining on the clock.  Rounding out the scoring was Peter Valente, a junior striker from Toronto, who tallied with four minutes to go.

Veteran keeper Jean-Lou Gosselin, a five-foot-10 junior from Montreal, needed only a pair of saves to post the shutout. His Vert & Or counterpart was credited with a whopping eight saves in a losing cause.

McGill (1-0) now gets a five-day respite to prepare for No.1-ranked Laval's much-awaited visit to Molson Stadium (Sept. 16) in a re-match of last year's CIS championship gold medal affair in Langley, B.C.  In that meeting, the Rouge et Or rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat McGill 3-2 and capture their first-ever national title.
