ROWING NATIONALS: Martlets lightweight coxed four finishes fifth
VICTORIA, B.C. - McGill finished fifth
of 10 entries in the women's lightweight coxed four at the Canadian
University Rowing Championship on Elk Lake over the weekend.
Victoria won that event, a two kilometre race, in seven minutes, 34.92 seconds. Queen's was second (7:42.92), followed by OUA champion Brock (7:45.14), Canada West champs UBC (7:45.98), McGill (7:48.64) and Western (7:51.36) to round out the top six.
The McGill crew featured sophomore Jennifer Allen of Montreal in the bow seat, followed by junior Iris Karry of Toronto, junior Emma Sheehan of St. Catharines and junior Marie-Christine Razaire of Montclair, N.J., who sat in the stroke seat. The coxswain was Rinita Mazumder, an anatomy junior from Victoria.
The UVic Vikes men's rowing team successfully defended their CURC title, finishing first of 23 schools and the Vikes women won the ninth banner in program history, as the 14th edition of the championships concluded on Sunday.
It marked the sixth championship in team history for the Vikes men,
who won after picking up gold medal victories in the lightweight
single and open pair. Silver medals came courtesy of the single,
lightweight double, and lightweight coxed four to give the Vikes a
point total of 123. Ontario champion Brock came in second (93), and
Western Canadian champion UBC placed third (85).
UVic women won their first CURC title since 2005 after sweeping the lightweight events; winning gold in the single, double and coxed four. The Vikes added bronze medals in the open single and coxed eight to finish with 108 total points. The two-time defending champion Western Mustangs placed second overall (93), and UBC third (78).
Brock's Ben Cushnie and Western's Sarah Black were named Canadian
University Rowing Championships Oarsmen of the year at the CURC
Awards banquet Sunday night.
Cushnie, helped Brock defend their title in the lightweight coxed four and was also a member of the eight that clinched silver. In addition to his wins at the CURC, the Welland, Ont. native was also a member of the first Canadian eight to ever the Dad Vail regatta, and won two gold at the Canadian Henley.
Black, was a double gold medalist for Western with first place finishes in the open pair and eight. At the OUA championship, the Ottawa native won the eight and coxed four, and previously won bronze in the eight at the under-23 world championship.
Coach of the Year honours were presented to Brock men's coach Mike Purcer and Western women's coach Dan Bechard.
The President's trophy, which recognizes contribution to the sport of rowing, was presented to Craig Pond. Pond is the coach of the UBC women's team and is also a CURA executive.
The awards were voted upon by the Canadian University Rowing Association coaches.
The Vikes capped off the title defence by winning their second straight gold medal in the men's open eight. The winning crew of Richard Herlinveaux, Will Odhmans, Eric Bevan, Ross Bringgold, Anthony Linton, Kai Langerfeld, Will O'Connell, Pete Brooks and cox Jane Gumley only needed to finish the race to secure the point-total win, but dominated the final with a winning time of 5:54.14. Brock won silver (5:57.08) and Western took bronze (5:59.07).
The Vikes women's lightweight coxed four clinched the team title with a gold-medal performance in the day's final race. The crew of Renae Barks, Leanne Fells, Ingrid Braul, Alex Meikeljohn and Sarah Krauetner left little doubt with a winning time of 7:34.92. Queen's placed second (7:42.92), followed by Brock (7:45.14).
Ingrid Braul got the Vikes off to a golden start, by winning their first race of the day, the women's lightweight single. Braul, a sophomore from Vancouver, posted a winning time of 8:10.62. UBC placed second (8:12.90) and Queen's third (8:13.61).
Kevin Mitchell, the current Under-23 national champion, secured gold for UVic in the men's lightweight single with a winning time of 7:33.21. Guelph won the silver (7:38.84) and Queen's bronze (7:42.59).
Vikes' Richard Herlinveaux and Kai Langerfeld struck gold in the men's open pair with a winning time of 6:55.07. Langerfeld, a rookie from Parksville, advanced through UVic's novice program just a year ago. Western won silver (6:57.51) and UBC bronze (7:06.32).
The Vikes combination of Leanne Fells and Alex Meiklejohn won gold in the women's lightweight double (7:56.21), improving upon their silver medal standing from a year ago. UBC came in second (8:06.77), while Queen's finished third (8:10.46).
UBC's men's lightweight double crew of Dan Guest and Maksim Kepskiy (6:40.94) won the first men's gold on Sunday. Victoria's Nial Paltiel and Brendan Downey won silver (6:43.63), and Guelph won bronze (6:47.50).
Ottawa's Kate Goodfellow won the first gold medal of the day in the women's open single (7:49.22). Western placed second (7:50.28) and UVic rookie Renae Barks won bronze (7:53.25).
UVic's Will O'Connell won silver in the men's open single, finishing second (7:40.97) behind Guelph's Adam Rabalski (7:38.37). UBC edged Trent by a narrow margin for bronze (7:46.72).
Western successfully defended their title in the women's open coxed eight, winning comfortably with a time of 6:48.20. The race for the final podium spots was much closer with Brock coming on strong late to win silver (6:56.73), and UVic winning bronze (6:58.82).
Brock repeated their title in the men's lightweight coxed four, capturing a two-length victory (6:40.94) over silver-medalist Victoria (6:45.06). Western captured bronze (6:53.91).
Western won the women's open pair with Jennifer Martins and Sarah Black crossing first in 7:51.75. Calgary picked up their first medal of the championship, winning silver (7:56.78) and Toronto captured bronze (8:00.31). The Vikes placed fifth.
