Redmen double Minutemen

Published: 2 May 2009

MONTREAL -- Midfielder Luke LaCava of Weston, Conn., tied a McGill record with five goals and captain Nick Moreau of Trumball, Conn., added a goal and four assists as the Redmen defeated the University of Massachusetts Minutemen club team 10-5 in non-conference lacrosse action at Forbes Field on the McGill campus, Saturday.

The Redmen, which fielded a half-roster of 17 players, jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first quarter, but UMASS kept it close at until halftime when McGill held a 5-4 lead.   The Redmen then blanked the Minutemen 4-0 in the third stanza and the teams traded fourth-quarter goals.

Registering one goal apiece for McGill was Scott Bailey of Calgary, Gavin Lichthardt of Murray, Utah, Ben McBeth of Keene, N.H., and Mike Ting of Sudbury, Mass.

A stingy Redmen defence, anchored by Brendan Farrer of Oakville, Ont., and Sepp Stephens of Chapel Hill, N.C., had solid outings, as did freshman Dave Mintz of Mountain Lakes, N.J., and senior midfielder Arthur Phillips of Portland, Me., who filled in on defence as the Redmen were missing a number of players who had returned home after completing their final exams last week.

Freshman Sean Grogan of Fords, N.J., junior Guy Fox of Glen Rock, N.J., split time in nets;  Grogan surrendered four goals in the first half while Fox allowed just one marker in the second half and earned the victory.

Nate Russell paced the Minutemen’s with a hat-trick and singles went to teammates Brendan Ekhoff and Mike Baker.

The two teams will tangle again on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. on Forbes Field.
