Redmen ambush Patriotes in semifinal, qualify for CIS national championship

MONTREAL -- Yohann Capolungo, a veteran midfielder from France, scored in the 74th minute as McGill blanked the UQTR Patriotes 1-0 in an RSEQ university men's soccer semifinal at Molson Stadium, Friday.

The result, combined with Montreal's 2-1 overtime win over UQAM, meant that McGill will play the first-place Montreal Carabins in the league championship game on Sunday at 1 p.m. More importantly, the Redmen also qualified for the CIS national championship tournament in Victoria, B.C., Nov. 10-13.

Capolungo, a two-time conference all-star, converted a nifty pass from Alex King, a sophomore from Detroit, for the decisive goal. King, who had come off the bench less than four minutes earlier, pounced on a loose ball and then fired a low crossing pass towards teammate Sebastian Munroe, who made it look like he was going to play the ball but let it go through his legs to Capolungo on the far right wing. The 5-foot-9 finance senior rifled a first-touch rocket into the corner, past goalkeeper Vincent Guay-Cote.

Goaltender Charles Kelly, a mechanical engineering freshman from Gloucester, Mass., who was filling in for injured 'keeper Matt Gilmour, made six saves to earn the shutout. He had a 2-0-1 record in three regular season starts heading into the playoffs.

"It was a real, evenly-matched playoff game and I thought we played a good solid defensive effort," said McGill bench boss David Simon, who was named earlier in the week as the conference coach of the year. "But we came on stronger in the second half, as we have done a number of times recently and that, along with a strong outing from Kelly in goal, was the difference."

McGill will make the short jaunt around the slopes of Mt. Royal to meet the Carabins in the RSEQ final on Sunday afternoon at CEPSUM Stadium. Both teams have qualified for the CIS tourney but will be playing for conference championship bragging rights and a better seeding at Nationals. McGill went 1-0-1 against the Carabins during the season, winning 3-1 at Molson Stadium and tying 0-0 at U de M.
