VICTORIA – The McGill Redmen remained 16th of 20 teams overall after two rounds at the Royal Canadian Golf Association collegiate championships, at the Cordova Bay course in Victoria, B.C.

Windy conditions resulted in higher scores for most teams but the tourney-leading UBC Thunderbirds once again posted the day’s top score, shooting a one-under par 283 to extend their lead in a quest for their first RCGA championship. They have an 18-stroke lead over second-place Victoria, followed by the defending champion Humber College Hawks in third, two strokes back.

The Redmen fired three eagles and their top four scorers combined to shoot a 22-over 306 on the day, a three-stroke improvement from Tuesday’s opening round, which put them 22 strokes over with two rounds completed. Combined with their opening round score of 148, the Redmen have a 47-over 615.

Sam Hayes of Aylmer, Que., led McGill with a three-over 74. Other individual scores for the Redmen on the day included Sebastien Thibodeau (75) of Laval, Que., Kyle Schiissler (78) of Beaconsfield, Que., Samuel Mamane (79) of Montreal and Aidan Brownlie (80) of Springfield, Mass.

Western's Geoff McLeod retained his lead atop the individual leaderboard, finishing the second round at five-under par through 34 holes.

After Thursday's third round, the field will be cut to the low 10 teams. The 72-hole tournament concludes on Friday.
