Mourning Gary Nachshen, BCL ’87, LLB’87

Published: 20 April 2011

It was with regret that the Faculty of Law learned of the sudden passing of Gary Nachshen, BCL '87, LLB'87, at the age of 51.

Gary Nachshen joined the Montréal office of Stikeman Elliott as a McGill Law student in 1986 and joined the partnership in 1996. One year later, he relocated to their Toronto office and was named Head of the firm's Pensions and Benefits Group.

"Despite being based in Toronto, Gary always maintained close ties with us in Montreal, both on the professional level and the personal level, often working on files involving our most important clients," said André J. Roy, managing partner of the Stikeman Elliott Montreal offices.

Gary Nachshen was widely regarded as one of Canada's finest practitioners in the law of finance, pension and benefits. His colleagues describe him as a gentleman who was generous with his time and expertise, citing his humour, thoughtfulness and strategic contributions to the direction of the firm and the practice of law. He was a sought-after and prolific writer, contributing commentary to a variety of publications, including Benefits Canada. He also acted in an executive and advisory role on several pensions, benefits and tax committees in the profession.

He leaves behind his wife, Julie Prentice, children Thomas and Emma and extended family, along with many friends, colleagues and fellow classmates.
