Published: 6 March 2012

MONTREAL - Geneviève Plante of the McGill women's volleyball team and Karl De Grandpré, a volleyball player with the Laval  Rouge et Or, have been selected athletes of the week by the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec, for the period ending Mar. 4, 2012.

It marks the 11th time in 23 weeks that a McGill nomination has won the RSEQ weekly award this season.

Plante, a 5-foot-9 power hitter from Montreal, was twice named as McGill's player of the game and earned a berth on the all-tournament team as the Martlets pulled off upsets over fourth-seeded Saint Mary's and the No.3-seeded Montreal Carabins in their three games to capture bronze at the CIS championship in Hamilton last weekend. A 21-year-old science sophomore who majors in kinesiology, she racked up 37 total points on 36 kills and a stuff block in 21 sets. On defence, she also had 38 digs, and three assists. Plante, who received a Quebec Foundation recruitment bursary when she enrolled at McGill in 2010, previously played for College Lionel-Groulx.

Previous RSEQ honorees from McGill this season include swimmer Steven Bielby (three times: Jan. 24, Oct. 25 and Nov. 15), hockey players Hubert Morin (Feb. 21), Mélodie Daoust (Jan. 31), Ann-Sophie Bettez (Jan. 17), Marc-Andre Dorion (Jan. 10) and Leslie Oles (Nov. 22), plus Gideon Balloch (rugby, Nov. 8) and Brianna Miller (rugby, Sept. 12).
