McGill swimmer Bielby named RSEQ athlete of the week

MONTREAL -- McGill University swimmer Steven Bielby of Pte. Claire, Que., has been named by the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec as the DeFacto Quebec university male athlete of the week, for the period ending Oct. 23, 2011.

 

Bielby, a sprinter and middle-distance specialist, led the Redmen to a first-place finish at the second Coupe de Quebec competition of the season, held at Memorial Pool on the McGill campus last Saturday.

 

An Academic All-Canadian and member of the Principal's Student-athlete Honour Roll, the 22-year-old electrical engineering senior captured four gold medals and was named male swimmer of the meet, accumulating 644.5 points on the FINA scoring system.

 

He qualified for the CIS championships while winning the 200m butterfly (2:03.51) and the 200 individual medley (2:05.20). A product of John Abbott College, Bielby also anchored the winning 4x50 freestyle relay (1:34.17) and the 4x200 freestyle relay (7:43.94).

 

Laval swimmer Geneviève Cantin was the female athlete of the week recipient.
