CIS TOP TEN TUESDAY (#1)

National champs top first CIS soccer rankings of 2010

Aug. 31, 2010

OTTAWA (CIS) - The McGill University men's soccer team, winners of a silver medal at the CIS national championships last year, are ranked second in the first CIS rankings of 2010.

The reigning national champion Trinity Western Spartans (women) top the first Canadian Interuniversity Sport soccer rankings of 2010. TWU, which joined the CIS in 2001, captured their second straight and third overall Gladys Bean memorial trophy last fall thanks to a 1-0 victory (4-2 on penalty kicks) over the Montreal Carabins in the national final, in Toronto. TWU opens at No. 1 for the second year in a row.

Rounding out the first women's coaches poll of the new campaign are the two-time Quebec champion Carabins in second place, followed by No. 3 UBC, No. 4 Queen's, No. 5 Toronto, No. 6 York, No. 7 St. Francis Xavier, No. 8 UPEI, No. 9 Victoria and No. 10 Dalhousie.

On the men's side, Laval starts at No. 1 for the first time in team history, nine months after claiming its first-ever Sam Davidson memorial trophy with a come-from-behind 3-2 win over QSSF rival McGill, in Langley, B.C.

The Rouge et Or men's soccer program was re-launched in 2000 after folding two decades before.

Rounding out the inaugural Top 10 are the No. 2 Redmen, No. 3 Trinity Western, No. 4 Toronto, No. 5 Victoria, No. 6 Cape Breton, No. 7 UPEI, No. 8 McMaster, No. 9 UBC and No. 10 York.

The 2010 regular season kicks off on Labour Day weekend with 25 women's and men's games in Ontario. Conference play in Quebec, Canada West and the AUS gets underway the following weekend.

The Trinity Western women open their CIS title defence with visits to Lethbridge and Calgary on Sept. 11 and 12, respectively. Reigning men's champion Laval hosts UQTR on Sept. 10 and UQAM on Sept. 12, in Quebec City.

The 2010 campaign will culminate November 11-14 with the women's national championship at the University of Prince Edward Island in Charlottetown and the men's tournament at the University of Toronto.
