MONTREAL - The ninth-ranked Montreal Carabins scored eight touchdowns and racked up 387 net yards en route to a 66-14 rout over visiting McGill in the Quebec University Football League opener before 4,649 at CEPSUM Stadium, Thursday.

It was the highest offensive output in school history for the Carabins, breaking their previous mark in a 58-7 win over the Redmen last season. The result extended McGill's losing streak to 17 consecutive regular-season games, which dates back to the 2006 campaign and is one short of the conference record established by Carleton between 1988 and 1990.

Montreal, which had 34 first downs compared to 16 by McGill, led 25-0 after the opening quarter, 48-0 at halftime and 48-14 after three quarters. Seven of their eight TDs came on an effusive ground attack, which totaled 264 yards on 46 plays.

Olivier Renière of Trois-Rivières and Alex Deluca of Boucherville, Que., registered two touchdowns apiece, with other majors going to Montreal natives Rotrand Sené (who led all rushers with 80 yards on 10 carries), Patrick Jean-Marie and quarterback Marc-Olivier Brouillette, who also hooked up with receiver Kevin Rivet on a nine-yard TD pass.

Brouillette completed 10 of 14 pass attempts for 113 yards and carried five times for 29 yards before giving way at halftime to understudy Alex Rivet, who made 3-of-7 passes for 21 yards and an interception.

Sophomore Ryne Bondy of Richmond Hill, Ont., started at quarterback for McGill and went 0-for-6 with an interception before going down with an upper body injury while being sacked five minutes into the second stanza. It was one of four QB sacks by the Carabins, who knocked both McGill pivots out of the game.

Among the few bright spots for McGill was the performance of freshman quarterback Jonathan Collin, a 6-foot-5, 240-pound native of Greenfield Park, Que., who came off the bench to complete 11 of 25 attempts for 124 yards and a pair of TD passes to All-Canadian receiver Charles-Antoine Sinotte (3 catches, 41 yards) of Trois-Rivières.

Collin, who ran for 26 yards on his first official CIS play and ended up with a pair of carries for 46 yards, looked impressive but suffered the same fate as Bondy and was helped off the field with an undisclosed injury after a late hit on the sideline in the final five minutes.

With only two pivots dressed, the Redmen had to turn to defensive back Greg Landry to call the signals for their final series, all rushing plays, before time mercifully expired.

"They're a very talented team but we made a lot of mistakes out there which will be corrected after we see the game film," said Redmen co-captain Anthony Lukca, a senior defensive back from St. Laurent, Que., who was credited with four tackles. "We play Sherbrooke next week and they have a similar running attack, so we should be able to make the necessary adjustments and be ready for them."

A conceded safety touch and 16 points from kicker Pierre-Paul Gélinas rounded out the scoring for the Carabins. Gélinas made field goals from 29 and 37 yards to go with eight conversions and a pair of rouges - including 78-yard kickoff single.

The game featured an incredible 42 penalties, including 23 to the Redmen, who were assessed 176 yards. The Carabins were flagged 19 times for 174 yards of real estate. McGill committed five turnovers, including a pair of fumbles, an interception and two others on downs. The Carabins only turned over the ball once, on an 18-yard interception return by Landry.

McGill (0-1) will host Sherbrooke (0-0) on Sept. 11, while Montreal (1-0) plays at Concordia (0-0) on Sept. 13.
