One Day @ McGill presents seminars that allow you first-hand access to a McGill experience. Held on the McGill University campus, these affordable small-group sessions are unique educational opportunities in which you are able to access in-depth knowledge produced by our academic community.

Description: This seminar aims to demystify the rich traditions of North Indian classical music, providing the tools to better understand and appreciate it. We will discuss the concepts of raga (melody), tala (rhythm) and rasa (mood); the instruments, such as the sitar, tabla, bansuri, santoor and voice; Indian culture as it applies to music, such as the guru-shishya-parampara (teacher-disciple-tradition) method of learning, and philosophical or spiritual aspects associated with the practice of and listening to this music. The session will include live demonstration, video examples and participatory musical exercises.
