Jorge Bustamante, UN Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Migrants, give the conference keynote address on "The Concept of Vulnerability of Migrants and States Responsibility in Immigrations Policies", kicking off the Conference on Forced Migrations and their Human Rights Challenges.

About the speaker

Dr. Jorge Bustamante (Ph.D., University of Notre Dame) is a Mexican sociologist and a Eugene Conley Professor of Sociology at University of Notre Dame since 1986.

Dr. Bustamante has published over 200 scientific publications on international migrations, with a focus on Mexican-United States migrations. His research on international migrations was awarded by the President of Mexico with the "Premio Nacional de Ciencias" in 1998 and with the "Premio Nacional de Demografia" in 1994.

On January 3, 2005, the Permanent Committee (Comisión Permanente) of the Legislative Power of México produced a resolution which was voted unanimously to nominate Dr. Bustamante for the Peace Nobel Price.  He has been selected as the 2007 recipient of the Cox-Johnson-Frazier Award, one of the two highest granted to a sociologist in the United States. On October 26, 2010 the Mexican Bar Association awarded Prof. Bustamante the National Jurisprudence Award for his work in favor of the human rights of migrants.

The lecture is open to the public and will be given in English, with simultaneous French translation.
