Research:  The McKinney lab investigates how proteins (in neural and glial) and their signaling complexes regulate synaptic morphology and function. The goal is to determine how different proteins inside dendritic spines at excitatory synapses play a role in synapse remodeling plasticity and maintenance. Proper spine structure, motility, and organization is likely critical for synaptic efficacy while abnormalities may be related epilepsy, autism, traumatic brain injury and cognitive disorders.
