Department of Biology EDI Committee

The Biology Department values diversity in our community. We are committed to an equitable and inclusive department that is welcoming and safe for all our members, including undergraduate and graduate students, postdocs and research assistants and associates, staff and faculty.

One way we promote this is through the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) committee. Our EDI committee seeks to advance a departmental climate that is fair, open, diverse and equitable by disseminating information and promoting awareness of resources to members of our community. The committee acts as a liaison between the Biology Department, the Faculty of Science, and the wider McGill community.

The Charles R. Drew Graduate Fellowships was launched in June 2021 in honour of one of McGill University’s most accomplished alumni: Charles R. Drew, MDCM’33, (1904–1950) an American surgeon and scientist who earned the title “Father of Blood Banking” for his trailblazing work on the long-term preservation of blood plasma. The fellowships provide financial support for graduates of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to pursue graduate studies at McGill. The initiative is part of the university’s Action Plan to Address Anti-Black Racism.
