Biography:

Werner obtained his DMV degree in Brazil in 2009. In 2012 he conducted his masters in animal pathophysiology working with stem and progenitors’ cells. During his Ph.D. studies, concluded in 2016, he investigated the in vitro cell reprograming using oocyte proteins and modulators of epigenetic mechanisms, and he has also characterized the expression pattern of several epigenetic regulators in porcine oocytes and embryos having different developmental capacity. After his PhD, he initiated his postdoctoral training at McGill University until 2022. During this time, he characterized the expression profile of several important histone demethylases during bovine and porcine embryo development in both fertilized and nuclear transfer derived embryos and demonstrated that specific histone demethylases are crucial for normal embryo development. He joined the Department of Animal Science as an Assistant Professor (Research) in February of 2023 to conduct research in applied embryology and gene editing in large animals and non-human primate models for biomedical field. His research interests are focused in: a) understanding the epigenetic regulation of genome activation in both porcine and non-human primate model; b) investigate how miRNAs and epigenetic erasers and writers affect and control embryo development and cell lineage specification, and c) explore gene and epigenome editing tools to produce animal models to study development and pathophysiology mechanisms of animal health. Werner has been working in partnership with researchers within the Department of Animal Science, the Department of Neurology and Neuroscience within the Faculty of Medicine of McGill University, the Centre for Research in Neuroscience, and the Research Institute of McGill University Health Center (RI-MUHC).
