Dr. Thomas M. Hemmerling, MD, DEAA, MSc, earned his medical degree from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Saarland, Germany, in 1989. He is a Professor in the Department of Anesthesia and Surgical & Interventional Sciences at McGill University. Dr. Hemmerling serves as Section Editor (Technology section) as well as Executive Editor for the journal Anesthesia & Analgesia and chairs the Research Committee for the Society for Technology in Anesthesia (STA). In 2006, Dr. Hemmerling founded the ITAG (Intelligent Technologies in Anesthesia Group) laboratory at McGill. He supervises 4–6 MSc or PhD students each year, focusing on artificial intelligence, simulation, robotics, and the environmental impact of medicine. Dr. Hemmerling is also the founder and sponsor of the SteigerKI Award, which supports high school students in Germany in learning about AI and developing related projects.
