The mission of the McGill Department of Anesthesia is to achieve excellence and innovation in teaching, clinical care, and research.

A McGill Professor’s Gift to His Hometown:
Teaching German Teenagers to Build AI

Professor Thomas Hemmerling’s SteigerKI program has spent two years equipping German high school students to build real AI tools — on their own time, from scratch.

Two years on, his SteigerKI program has introduced more than 40 students at the Deutsch-Französisches Gymnasium (DFG) to hands-on AI development — driven entirely by the students' own initiative and mentored remotely by a team of researchers from his ITAG Laboratory at McGill.

Thomas Engelhardt appointed Chair of the Department of Anesthesia

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Thomas Engelhardt, MD, PhD, as Chair of the Department of Anesthesia, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS), McGill University.

Dr. Engelhardt will take over as Chair from Thomas Schricker, MD, PhD, who has held the position for two consecutive terms since 2016. We would like to sincerely thank Dr. Schricker for his dedication to the Department. His achievements as Chair are many and include the transition of the Anesthesia residency program into the new Competency by Design curriculum in 2017; building on McGill’s leadership—in collaboration with the Department of Surgery—as the first institution in North America to implement Enhanced Recovery after Surgery; and establishing the Transition into Clinical Practice (TCP) curriculum at McGill’s Campus Outaouais.
